The Sepoy Mutiny

In 1857, rumors had spread among the Sepoys (Indian Soldiers), that the cartridges to their new rifles had been sealed with beef and pork fat that had to be bitten off, and because of their Hindu and beliefs they were outraged. Those soldiers refusing to use the cartridges because of those reasons were immediatly thrown in jail. Starting a rebellion against the British on May 10,1857.The "Mutiny" as some historians have called it was an uprising that spread over much of northern India, and was very violent, it was almost a year before the East India Company to regain control of the government. After the EIC had regained control with the aid of British troop the Indians were not strong enough because of the lack on leadership and unity. As a result of the mutiny , in 1858 the British government took direct command of India which was held until 1947. It also fueled the rascist attitudes of the English towards Indians and created a great distrust between the British and the Indians. There for it was not very successful at all for the Indians.
