Intro

Chapters 10 and 11
These chapters are all about progress, power, and change, more specifically a movement towards democracy, an age of scientific and technological advances, and Imperialism. This times were filled with political reforms, foreign control, new ideas and inventions, and rebellions.
Through this blog I hope to accomplish an understanding of Imperialsm and the different forms of it, ideas theories and inventions that have influences today that came up during this time, how democracy has spread, crucial people of the time that are still glorified today, and an overall understanding of how this time period has influenced today's world, and how it has become what it is.

One of Edison's Many Inventions

The Phonograph

The phonograph is a device that was used for playing sound recordings. The recordings played on such a device generally consisting of wavy lines that are either scratched, engraved, or grooved onto a rotating cylinder or disc. As the cylinder or disc rotates, a needle on the device traces the wavy lines and vibrates, reproducing sound waves. It was not until 1877 when  thomas edison successfully conceived the principle of recording and reproducing sound, and demonstrated the phonograph for the first time. Edison's early devices recorded sound onto a tinfoil sheet phonograph cylinder. The idea of this invention led to many other inventions it aided in the production of movies, eventually popularizing music, as the technology was the baseline for record players which led to the the compact disc or cd which would be played in a "cd" player, which is used today. This invention greatly affected common life over time, movies and music became popular and still are today, this baseline invention has become a daily part of our life whether it be listening to a cd in your car to watching a movie, it has given a way to record history.

Scientific Advances

In 1803, British chemist Jonh Dalton theorized that all matter is made up of tiny particles called atoms. Dalton showed that elements contain only one kind of atom, which has a specific weight, while compounds, being made up of multiple elements, contain more than one kind of atom. This theory further describes the make up of all things and gave scientist and all people and idea of what things and elements were made up of, at the most basic and smallest level. It broke down everything, showing that everyhting is just made up of a grouping of a atoms. This aided in further scientific research and has held true to the day. This discovery helped move science forward in these ways, and let to more experiments on atoms themselves, the atom is also a crucial part of the "big bang theory" which is being tested today.

Imperialism

How Imperialism Helped The World:
-Helped during industrialization by opening up new markets and raw materials to improve that countries economy.
-Furthered efforts of modernization, spreading it through out Africa.
-Greatly expanded trade between countries offering new variety of raw materials and goods to the world.

How Imperialism Hurt The World:
-Influenced racism between people of different colonies, as they felt better then the other peoples.
-The push for Imperialism from the bigger and stronger countries, caused a lot of violence with the people.
-Many were forced to abandon their religions, traditions, and beliefs, losing great cultures and history over time.

Empire Control

Economic Imperialism

Economic Imperialism was a way for an empire to control its colony. It is where independent but less developed nations are controlled by private business interensts rather thean by a government. This would consist of no foreign government and a self supporting econmy, led by a major company. One example of this would be that of Hawaii where the Dole Fruit Company had complete control over the pineapple trade.

Uprising in European Colonies

The Sepoy Mutiny

In 1857, rumors had spread among the Sepoys (Indian Soldiers), that the cartridges to their new rifles had been sealed with beef and pork fat that had to be bitten off, and because of their Hindu and beliefs they were outraged. Those soldiers refusing to use the cartridges because of those reasons were immediatly thrown in jail. Starting a rebellion against the British on May 10,1857.The "Mutiny" as some historians have called it was an uprising that spread over much of northern India, and was very violent, it was almost a year before the East India Company to regain control of the government. After the EIC had regained control with the aid of British troop the Indians were not strong enough because of the lack on leadership and unity. As a result of the mutiny , in 1858 the British government took direct command of India which was held until 1947. It also fueled the rascist attitudes of the English towards Indians and created a great distrust between the British and the Indians. There for it was not very successful at all for the Indians.

Connection Across Time: The Suez Canal

Today the Suez Canal is in complete control and ownership of Egypt, the canal connects the Mediterranean Sea to the Red Sea. Three convoys a day use the canal and in 2003 it was reported that 17,224 ships had used the canal for transportation. The canal is very important today, around 8% of the worlds good travel through the Suez canal, as it avoids traveling around Africa a total of 4,00 miles saved and and two weeks time.
